Videoart at Midnight

a project by Olaf Stüber and Ivo Wessel back...

(please scroll down for english version) Der Sammler Ivo Wessel und der Galerist Olaf Stüber begeistern sich seit mehreren Jahren für Videokunst mit der Überzeugung, es dabei mit einer der interessantesten Formen zeitgenössischer Kunstproduktion zu tun zu haben. Neben der inhaltlichen Auseinandersetzung fasziniert sie auch immer die Frage der Inszenierung einer Videoarbeit und die Besonderheiten der Rezeption: Wie zeige ich ein Kunstwerk adäquat und wie schaffe ich einen Raum, der den bestmöglichen Zugang zu diesem Werk erlaubt – in einer Sammlung, auf Messen, in einer Ausstellung? So unterschiedlich die Formen von Videokunst sind, und so schnell die technische Entwicklung voranschreitet, ist auf die Frage der bestmöglichen Präsentation keine eindeutige Antwort zu geben. So funktioniert die eine Arbeit vielleicht auf dem Display eines Handys, die andere als im Loop laufende Installation im musealen Raum und eine dritte etwa mit Monitor und Kopfhörer. Ivo Wessel und Olaf Stüber interessieren sich in Ihrem Projekt für das Video im Referenzrahmen Kino. Also für das gemeinschaftliche Schauen von sogenannte Einkanalarbeiten mit Anfang und Ende, meist mit einem Erzählstrang, auf eine große Leinwand projiziert, mit all den Obertönen, die im Kino als Bezugssystem mitschwingen. In meist monogafischen Präsentationen nehmen sie die Grenze zwischen Video und Film in den Fokus: wo hört Video auf und beginnt der Film et vice versa. In Kooperation mit dem BABYLON am Rosa-Luxemburg Platz in Berlin-Mitte laden Ivo Wessel und Olaf Stüber in den großen Kinosaal ein. So monatlich wie möglich, immer an einem Freitag, immer um 24 Uhr.

(english version) Collector Ivo Wessel and gallerist Olaf Stüber have been video art enthusiasts for several years, convinced that it represents one of the most interesting forms of expression for contemporary art. Alongside a thematic interest in the issue, they are often fascinated by the question of the staging of a video work and the particularities of reception: how to present an art work in an adequate fashion and how to create an environment that allows for the optimal access to a work in a collection, at an art fair, at an exhibition? As varied the forms of video art today are, and as rapidly as current developments progress, there is still no clear answer to the question of what is the best form of presentation. A work can function on a handy display, another work might work best as a loop in a museum space, while a third is best seen on a monitor and headphones. Ivo Wessel and Olaf Stüber explore in their shared interest in narrative video work in particular one of these aspects that is clearly crystallizing among artists of the younger generation: creating works that almost demand the format of the cinema, the cinema screen, and lolling about in comfortable seats. In cooperation with Babylon at Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz, Ivo Wessel and Olaf Stüber invite you to come and share their obsession. As monthly as possible, always on a Friday, always at midnight.
